Winter Driving to and from Jobsites

Talking points

  1. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of workplace fatalities across all industries. Commuting to and from remote jobsites in winter weather adds significant risk.
  2. Prepare your vehicle: check tire tread and pressure, windshield wipers and fluid, battery condition, and antifreeze levels. Carry an emergency kit with blankets, flashlight, phone charger, and basic tools.
  3. Increase following distance to at least 4-6 seconds on wet roads and 8-10 seconds on ice. Braking distance on ice can be 10 times longer than on dry pavement.
  4. Black ice forms on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas first. If the temperature is near or below freezing and the road looks wet, assume it is ice.
  5. If your vehicle begins to slide, stay calm, ease off the accelerator, and steer gently in the direction you want to go. Do not slam the brakes — even with ABS, this reduces control.

Ask the crew

How are the road conditions today — and is your vehicle prepared for winter driving?

  • Section 5(a)(1)

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
