Respirator Cartridge and Filter Selection

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Respirator cartridges and filters are not interchangeable. Each type protects against specific hazards: P100 (magenta) for particles, OV (black) for organic vapors, AG (yellow) for acid gases.
  2. Combination cartridges (OV/P100) are common on construction sites and protect against both organic vapors and particulates — useful for spray painting, where you encounter both solvent vapors and paint mist.
  3. Cartridge change-out schedules are mandatory. For particulate filters, change when breathing becomes difficult. For chemical cartridges, change when you smell or taste the contaminant — or on a calendar schedule, whichever comes first.
  4. NIOSH color-coding makes selection visual: black = organic vapor, yellow = acid gas, white = acid gas (certain types), magenta = P100 particles, olive = multi-gas. Check the label — color alone is not sufficient.
  5. Cartridges have a shelf life even when sealed. Check the expiration date before use. Opened cartridges left overnight in contaminated environments may be partially used and should not be reused the next day.

Ask the crew

What cartridge type is in your respirator right now — and is it the correct one for the hazard you are working with today?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
