Diesel Exhaust Exposure

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Diesel exhaust is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer — meaning there is sufficient evidence that it causes cancer in humans, particularly lung cancer.
  2. Construction workers are exposed to diesel exhaust from excavators, generators, loaders, haul trucks, and concrete pumps — often in enclosed or semi-enclosed work areas.
  3. Diesel particulate filters (DPF) on newer equipment reduce emissions by up to 90%. When possible, use equipment with functioning DPF systems.
  4. Position diesel equipment so exhaust blows away from work areas and building air intakes. Use electric or propane alternatives indoors whenever feasible.
  5. Symptoms of acute overexposure include headache, dizziness, nausea, cough, and eye irritation. Long-term exposure increases cancer risk even when acute symptoms are absent.

Ask the crew

Are any diesel engines running near our work area — and is the exhaust being directed away from the crew?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
