Working Over Dangerous Equipment

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. When workers are exposed to falling into or onto dangerous equipment — conveyors, augers, vats, tanks, or machinery — fall protection is required regardless of height. There is no minimum height trigger.
  2. Guardrails or covers over the equipment are the preferred protection. PFAS is an alternative when guardrails interfere with operations.
  3. Even a short fall into operating machinery can be fatal. A 2-foot fall into an auger or conveyor is as dangerous as a 20-foot fall to a lower level.
  4. Lock out and tag out the dangerous equipment below if workers are performing maintenance above it. This eliminates the hazard entirely rather than just protecting against it.
  5. Assess the hazard during pre-task planning. If the work requires being over dangerous equipment, plan the fall protection method, verify anchorage, and brief the crew before starting.

Ask the crew

Is anyone working above machinery, conveyors, or other dangerous equipment today — and is fall protection in place?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
