Wet Location Electrical Work

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Water dramatically reduces the body's electrical resistance, increasing the severity of shock from any voltage. What might cause a tingle in dry conditions can cause electrocution in wet conditions.
  2. GFCI protection is non-negotiable in wet locations. Test GFCIs before each use — a GFCI that trips in a dry test may not trip fast enough in wet conditions if it is degraded.
  3. Use only equipment rated for wet locations — marked 'W' or 'WP' (weatherproof). Standard indoor-rated equipment is not designed for moisture exposure.
  4. Keep electrical connections off the ground and out of standing water. Use elevated junction boxes, waterproof connectors, and cord management to prevent submersion.
  5. If you must work in standing water near electrical equipment, consider de-energizing the circuit entirely, using battery-powered tools, or using pneumatic tools instead.

Ask the crew

Is there any standing water in our work area near electrical outlets, cords, or equipment right now?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
