Welding in Confined Spaces
Construction and general industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- All cylinders and welding machines must remain outside the confined space. Only the torch and leads enter the space.
- Mechanical ventilation is mandatory when welding in a confined space. Natural ventilation alone is never sufficient.
- Continuous atmospheric monitoring for oxygen, LEL, and toxic gases must be performed throughout the welding operation.
- A fire watch must be stationed both inside (if possible) and outside the space. Sparks and slag can accumulate in hidden areas.
- When welding is interrupted for a substantial period — like a lunch break — remove the electrode from the holder and shut off the gas supply.
Ask the crew
If we're welding inside a space today, are the cylinders outside, the ventilation running, and a fire watch in place?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
