Traffic Safety — Construction Vehicle Operators
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Perform a pre-trip walkaround before every shift: check tires, lights, mirrors, brakes, steering, windshield wipers, horn, and backup alarm. Document deficiencies and do not operate until corrected.
- Blind spots on construction vehicles are much larger than on passenger cars. Know your vehicle's blind spots and use mirrors, cameras, and spotters to cover them.
- Maintain safe speeds on site — typically 5-15 mph depending on site conditions. Wet, muddy, and unpaved surfaces require even slower speeds.
- When pedestrians are present, slow down, sound the horn, and make eye contact. Assume that a pedestrian who is wearing hearing protection cannot hear your vehicle approaching.
- OSHA requires seat belts on ROPS-equipped machines — and a ROPS only saves you if you are wearing the belt, so buckle up every time the machine moves. In a rollover, the seat belt keeps you inside the protective structure — being thrown from the cab is often fatal.
Ask the crew
Did you complete a pre-trip inspection on your vehicle today — and are all the safety devices (backup alarm, mirrors, lights) working?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
