Tilt-Up Construction

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Temporary bracing for tilt-up panels must be designed by a Professional Engineer and installed before the crane releases the panel.
  2. OSHA's rule is that every tilt-up panel stay adequately supported until its permanent connections are complete — in practice that means bracing per the erection drawings, typically at least two braces per panel. Braces must be secured to both the panel and the floor slab at the specified locations.
  3. No one may work or walk on the side of a panel opposite the braces during erection — if the panel falls, it falls toward the unbraced side.
  4. Rigging hardware — inserts, strongbacks, and lifting clutches — must be inspected before each lift and must match the panel weight.
  5. Wind is the enemy of tilt-up erection. Monitor wind speed continuously and suspend operations when speeds exceed the engineer's limits for the panel size.

Ask the crew

Are the braces installed per the engineer's plan, and is anyone working on the unbraced side of a panel right now?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
