Temporary Traffic Control (Work Zones)

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. A Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) plan is required for all work that affects public traffic. The plan must conform to the MUTCD and any state or local requirements.
  2. Channelizing devices — cones, barrels, barriers — must be placed per the plan to guide traffic around the work area. Include adequate advance warning signs.
  3. The MUTCD — the national work-zone standard every road project follows — sizes the buffer space between the work area and live traffic by speed, stopping distance, and the traffic control devices in use.
  4. For night work the MUTCD calls for enhanced delineation — retroreflective channelizers, warning lights, and illuminated signs. Standard cones without reflectors are not sufficient at night.
  5. Workers in the TTC zone wear high-visibility apparel matched to traffic speed and time of day under the MUTCD's worker-visibility provisions — ANSI 107 Class 2 as the floor, Class 3 for night and high-speed exposure.

Ask the crew

Is our work zone set up exactly per the TTC plan — and are all the signs and channelizers in the right positions?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
