Telehandler (Reach Forklift) Safety

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Telehandler capacity decreases dramatically as the boom extends. A machine rated for 10,000 pounds at a 6-foot reach may only handle 3,000 pounds at full extension. Check the load chart.
  2. Tip-over is the greatest risk with telehandlers. Operating on slopes, uneven ground, or with the boom extended to the side compounds the risk. Level the machine before lifting.
  3. Telehandlers are not cranes. Unless equipped and certified for personnel lifting, they must not be used to lift workers in a basket. Use the correct equipment for the task.
  4. Operators must be trained and evaluated on the specific telehandler model they will use. Telehandler controls and behavior differ significantly from standard forklifts.
  5. Keep the boom low during travel. A raised boom shifts the center of gravity upward and increases the risk of tip-over, especially on uneven terrain.

Ask the crew

Has the telehandler operator reviewed the load chart for today's heaviest planned pick — at the required reach distance?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
