Subcontractor Safety Expectations

Talking points

  1. As a subcontractor on this site, you are responsible for complying with all OSHA standards AND the general contractor's site-specific safety plan. The stricter requirement always applies.
  2. Complete the site orientation before starting work. Every worker on your crew must go through orientation — no exceptions for 'experienced' workers or one-day tasks.
  3. Common violations that result in removal from site: missing or inadequate fall protection, not wearing required PPE, operating equipment without authorization, and bypassing LOTO procedures.
  4. Report all incidents, injuries, and near-misses to the GC's safety team immediately — not just to your own company. The GC needs this information to protect all workers on site.
  5. Attend all required safety meetings, toolbox talks, and pre-task planning sessions. Your presence is not optional, and your input improves safety for everyone.

Ask the crew

Do all subcontractors on site understand the GC's safety expectations — and has every worker completed orientation?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
