Struck-By Prevention — Falling Objects
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Toeboards on scaffold platforms prevent tools and materials from being kicked off the edge. They must be at least 3.5 inches high.
- Overhead canopies or covered walkways are required when workers must pass under areas where there is a risk of falling objects.
- Use tool lanyards for all hand tools when working at height. A dropped wrench from 100 feet can strike with the force of a bullet.
- Debris nets below active work areas catch falling material. They must be inspected regularly and cleared of accumulated debris.
- Hard hat zones must be established and enforced wherever there is any risk of falling objects — even in areas that seem low-risk.
Ask the crew
Is everyone working at height today using tool lanyards — and is the area below barricaded or protected?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
