Struck-By Hazards — Overview

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Struck-by is one of OSHA's Fatal Four — the four leading causes of construction fatalities. Objects that fly, fall, swing, or roll are the main threats.
  2. Never position yourself under a suspended load — even momentarily. If a crane or hoist is moving material above you, move out from underneath.
  3. Secure all tools and materials at height with tool lanyards, toeboards, debris nets, or enclosed tool bags to prevent them from falling on workers below.
  4. Be aware of vehicles and mobile equipment — stay visible, make eye contact with operators, and stay outside the swing radius of excavators and cranes.
  5. Hard hats, safety glasses, and high-visibility clothing are your last line of defense — wear them properly and inspect them daily.

Ask the crew

Can you think of a time on this job where something fell or flew toward someone — what could have prevented it?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
