Steel Erection — General
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Steel erection may not begin until the controlling contractor confirms in writing that the footing and wall concrete is strong enough — and a crew departing from the standard's default protections needs a site-specific erection plan, written by a qualified person, in place first.
- Anchor bolts: a minimum of four bolts per column must be installed in the concrete pier or footing before columns are set.
- No loads may be placed on the steel structure until connections are secured and sufficient structural stability has been achieved.
- Column splices must be designed to resist construction loads. Temporary guying, bracing, or shoring may be required until permanent connections are completed.
- All workers involved in steel erection must receive training specific to the hazards of steel erection — this is in addition to general fall protection training.
Ask the crew
Has the erection plan been reviewed with the crew today — and does everyone understand the sequence?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
