Steel Erection — Fall Protection

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Connectors (ironworkers making initial connections) are exempt from fall protection below 15 feet, but must be protected above 30 feet for decking operations.
  2. Between 15 and 30 feet, connectors must have completed connector training and be provided with a PFAS, even if they choose when to use it.
  3. Controlled decking zones are permitted for initial decking of steel structures — these zones have specific size limits and must be clearly marked.
  4. At least two bolts must be installed at each connection point before the load is released from the crane. This is the minimum for structural integrity.
  5. A site-specific erection plan is required and must address fall protection, crane procedures, and the sequence of steel placement.

Ask the crew

Why do you think ironworkers have different fall protection height triggers than other trades?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
