Stacking and Storage — Material Yards

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Lumber must be stacked no higher than 20 feet and cross-piled to create stability. Remove nails from used lumber before stacking.
  2. Brick stacks must not exceed 7 feet in height. Taper the stack back 2 inches for every foot above 4 feet.
  3. Round stock — pipe, rebar, conduit — must be blocked or chocked to prevent rolling. One displaced chock can release an entire pile.
  4. Never lean materials against walls or structures where they could slide or be knocked over. Secure them flat or in racks.
  5. Leave sufficient aisle space between stacks for workers and equipment to pass safely — typically at least 3 feet, more for forklift access.

Ask the crew

Is there any material in our storage area that could fall, roll, or collapse if bumped — and what should we do about it?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
