Spill Prevention and Cleanup

Talking points
- A Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan is required for facilities storing more than 1,320 gallons of oil/petroleum products in aggregate.
- Secondary containment — berms, dikes, or drip pans — must be in place around bulk storage to capture spills before they reach the ground or waterways.
- Spill kits must be readily accessible near all chemical and fuel storage areas. Know the contents: absorbent pads, booms, gloves, bags, and instructions.
- Report any spill above the reportable quantity to your supervisor immediately. Some spills require notification to state or federal agencies within a specific timeframe.
- Only trained personnel should clean up chemical spills. If you don't know what was spilled, do not attempt cleanup — evacuate the area and notify your supervisor.
Ask the crew
Where is the nearest spill kit, and does everyone know how to use it?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
