Signs, Signals, and Barricades

Talking points
- DANGER signs (red, black, and white) indicate an immediate hazard that could cause death or serious injury. Do not enter a danger zone without authorization.
- CAUTION signs (yellow with black text) warn of potential hazards that could cause moderate injury. Follow the instructions on the sign.
- Color coding follows ANSI Z535: Red = danger/fire, Orange = warning, Yellow = caution, Green = safety/first aid, Blue = information.
- Barricade tape is for awareness only — it is not a physical barrier. Respecting tape boundaries requires a conscious decision by every worker who sees it.
- When you set up a barricade, make sure it is visible, complete (no gaps), and communicated to the crew. A barricade that nobody knows about protects nobody.
Ask the crew
Is every barricade and sign on our site today still in place and properly communicated — or have any been knocked down or ignored?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
