Selecting the Right Hard Hat (Type I vs. Type II)

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Type I hard hats protect from impacts to the top of the head only. Type II hard hats protect from both top and lateral (side) impacts. Know which one your site requires.
  2. Some tasks present greater lateral impact risk: working in confined spaces, steel erection, and areas with low-clearance obstructions. Type II may be appropriate even if not site-mandated.
  3. Vented hard hats improve airflow and comfort in heat but are NOT rated for electrical protection. If you work near energized equipment, use a non-vented hard hat rated Class E or Class G.
  4. Hard hat accessories — chin straps, visors, face shields, earmuff attachments, and neck shades — must be compatible with your specific hard hat model. Using incompatible accessories can compromise protection.
  5. Consider upgrading to a hard hat with integrated impact liner (like a climbing-style helmet). These provide enhanced protection and are increasingly accepted on construction sites.

Ask the crew

What type and class of hard hat are you wearing — and is it the right choice for today's work?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
