Scaffolding — Rolling/Mobile Scaffolds
Construction and general industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- All caster wheels must be locked before anyone climbs or works on a mobile scaffold. Unlocked casters are one of the most common scaffold citation items.
- Keep a mobile scaffold's height within four times its minimum base dimension — beyond that ratio OSHA requires restraint from tipping by guying, tying, or bracing, and outriggers widen the base to keep the math on your side.
- No workers may ride on a mobile scaffold while it is being moved. Everyone must dismount before repositioning.
- Move the scaffold on a level surface only. Even a slight grade can cause a mobile scaffold to roll uncontrollably.
- Apply the same guardrail and platform requirements as supported scaffolds — top rail, midrail, toeboards, and full planking.
Ask the crew
Are the casters locked on our rolling scaffold right now — and is the height within the 4:1 ratio?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
