Scaffolding — Access and Erection
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Safe access — a ladder, stair tower, or ramp — is required whenever the scaffold platform is more than 2 feet above or below a point of access.
- Climbing on cross-braces is prohibited. If there is no built-in ladder or stair, one must be provided before anyone works on the scaffold.
- Only a competent person may direct the erection, moving, dismantling, or alteration of a scaffold. If you are not that person, do not modify the scaffold.
- During erection and dismantling, fall protection is still required for workers at height — this is when many scaffold-related injuries occur.
- Tag scaffolds clearly: green tag means fully inspected and safe; red tag means incomplete or unsafe — never use a red-tagged scaffold.
Ask the crew
What would you do if you saw someone climbing the cross-braces to reach a scaffold platform?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
