Scaffold Tagging Systems (Green/Yellow/Red)

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Green tag: the scaffold has been fully inspected by a competent person and is safe for use. All components are in place, the platform is complete, and guardrails are installed.
  2. Yellow tag: the scaffold is usable with restrictions — for example, limited load capacity, partial platform, or specific trades only. Read the tag to understand the restrictions before using.
  3. Red tag: the scaffold is unsafe, incomplete, or under construction/dismantling. Do NOT use a red-tagged scaffold for any purpose, even briefly.
  4. Only the competent person may change a scaffold tag. If you believe a tag is wrong — a green-tagged scaffold that seems unsafe, or a yellow tag with unclear restrictions — stop and find the competent person.
  5. Tags must include the date of inspection, the competent person's name, and any restrictions. A tag without this information should be treated as a red tag.

Ask the crew

Check the tag on the scaffold we are using today — what color is it, who signed it, and when was it inspected?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
