Roofing — Steep-Slope Roofs

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. A steep-slope roof is any roof with a pitch greater than 4 inches of rise per 12 inches of run. Fall protection is required at 6 feet.
  2. On steep-slope roofs, a safety monitor system alone is NOT permitted — you must use guardrails, safety nets, or PFAS.
  3. Roof brackets (also called roof jacks) provide a temporary work platform and can serve as an anchor point when properly installed.
  4. Footwear matters — wear boots with slip-resistant soles designed for roof work. Smooth-soled shoes are a leading contributor to roof falls.
  5. Never walk on a steep roof without your fall protection attached. Even experienced roofers can lose footing — gravity does not care about your skill level.

Ask the crew

What's the steepest roof you've worked on, and what fall protection was used?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
