Roofing — Built-Up and Torch-Applied
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Torch-applied roofing requires a fire watch during application and for at least 2 hours after the last torch is extinguished.
- A fire extinguisher must be within 6 feet of any active torch operation on a roof.
- Position hot asphalt kettles well clear of structures and combustibles — fire codes like NFPA 241 and local fire marshals commonly require at least 20 feet. Monitor the kettle temperature continuously.
- Check the roof deck before torching — gaps, cracks, and openings allow heat to reach combustible substrates below, which is a leading cause of roof fires.
- Fall protection is required for all roofing work at 6 feet — the fire risk does not excuse fall protection. Combine fire safety and fall protection in your plan.
Ask the crew
Who is the fire watch today, and do they have a charged extinguisher within reach?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
