Retractable SRL Inspection and Use

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) limit freefall to inches rather than the 6 feet allowed by standard lanyards. They retract like a tape measure and lock when pulled sharply.
  2. Inspect SRLs before each use: check the housing for cracks or dents, test the locking mechanism by pulling sharply, verify the lifeline for cuts or fraying, and check the snap hook for proper closure.
  3. Swing fall is the primary hazard with SRLs. If you are not directly below the anchorage, a fall results in a pendulum swing that can slam you into a wall, column, or lower level.
  4. Position the SRL directly above your work area whenever possible. If lateral movement is necessary, use a horizontal lifeline system designed to limit swing fall.
  5. SRLs must be removed from service and sent for manufacturer inspection after any fall arrest. Internal components may be damaged even if the outside looks fine.

Ask the crew

Test your SRL right now — pull the lifeline sharply and verify that the braking mechanism locks immediately.

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
