Pre-Task Planning (PTP) and JHA Review

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Pre-task planning happens every morning before work begins. It is a brief review of today's specific tasks, the hazards associated with each, and the controls in place.
  2. A PTP is different from a JHA. The JHA is a pre-built analysis of the task type. The PTP applies that JHA to today's specific conditions — weather, equipment, crew, site layout.
  3. Walk through each step of the task: what could go wrong, what is the worst that could happen, and what are we doing to prevent it. This is not paperwork — it is a conversation.
  4. Every crew member should participate. The person doing the task often knows the real hazards better than the person writing the plan. Ask questions and listen.
  5. If conditions change during the day — weather, crew changes, unexpected site conditions — update the PTP. A morning plan that no longer reflects reality provides no protection.

Ask the crew

Have we done our pre-task plan for today's work — and does it reflect the actual conditions we are working in right now?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
