Powder-Actuated Tools

Talking points
- Only trained operators may use powder-actuated tools. The operator's card comes from ANSI A10.3, the fastening-tool standard OSHA's rule makes binding — carry it whenever you use the tool.
- Test-fire into a test material at the beginning of each shift to verify the tool is functioning properly.
- Never point a powder-actuated tool at anyone, loaded or unloaded. Treat it with the same respect as a firearm.
- Do not use in explosive or flammable atmospheres. The charge can ignite flammable vapors.
- A guard is required on the muzzle end to protect against flying fragments. Check that it is intact before each use.
Ask the crew
Is the operator using this tool today trained and carrying their card — and have they test-fired the tool this shift?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
