Pile Driving Safety
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- A competent person must inspect the pile driving equipment — hammer, leads, helmet, and cap — daily before use.
- No workers may be under the hammer or pile at any time during driving operations. Clear the area and establish exclusion zones.
- Adequate blocking must be used to support piles during positioning to prevent them from falling before driving begins.
- Hearing protection is mandatory — pile driving generates extreme noise levels well above the 90 dBA PEL.
- Watch for bounceback and misalignment — a pile that shifts during driving can release suddenly and strike nearby workers.
Ask the crew
Is the exclusion zone set up for today's pile driving — and is everyone wearing hearing protection?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
