Personal Hygiene — Hazardous Materials

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Never eat, drink, smoke, or apply cosmetics in areas where hazardous materials are present. Ingestion is a real exposure route — contaminated hands transfer chemicals to food.
  2. Wash your hands and face with soap and water before eating, drinking, or leaving the work area. Hand sanitizer does not remove heavy metals or chemical residues.
  3. Change out of contaminated clothing before leaving the site. Clothes contaminated with lead, silica, or asbestos can expose your family at home.
  4. Decontamination stations must be provided when working with particularly hazardous substances — lead, asbestos, and certain chemicals.
  5. Shower facilities may be required depending on the substance. Check the SDS and the applicable OSHA standard for hygiene requirements.

Ask the crew

Are we washing up before breaks — and are we changing clothes before going home when we've been working with dusty or chemical materials?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
