Oxy-Fuel Cutting and Welding

Talking points
- Store oxygen cylinders at least 20 feet from fuel gas cylinders, or separate them with a 5-foot-high noncombustible barrier with a 30-minute fire rating.
- Flashback arrestors must be installed on both the torch end and the regulator end of the hoses. Check valves alone are not sufficient.
- Before lighting the torch, purge each hose individually to remove any mixed gases. Open fuel gas first when lighting; close fuel gas last when shutting down.
- Never use oil, grease, or any petroleum-based product on oxygen equipment. Oxygen under pressure plus hydrocarbons equals an explosive reaction.
- Inspect hoses for cracks, burns, and leaks before each use. Replace damaged hoses — do not tape them.
Ask the crew
Are our cylinders separated properly right now — and do our torches have flashback arrestors on both ends?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
