Overhead Loads and Barricading
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- No worker should ever stand or walk under a suspended load. Barricade the area under and around any active lift zone.
- Tag lines are required on loads that could swing, spin, or contact structures. The tag line operator must stay clear of the drop zone.
- Barricade the full swing radius of the crane's boom and load. Workers outside the barricade should understand that the load can swing beyond its intended path.
- Store materials away from edges where they could be knocked off by wind, vibration, or accidental contact — especially near multi-story openings.
- If you see an unsecured load overhead, do not walk under it. Alert the crew and the operator immediately.
Ask the crew
What's the best way to barricade a lift zone when there's a lot of foot traffic on site?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
