Occupational Skin Disorders (Dermatitis)

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Skin disorders are the second most common occupational illness. Construction workers encounter irritant dermatitis (from cement, solvents, fiberglass) and allergic dermatitis (from epoxies, chromates in cement, nickel).
  2. Irritant dermatitis appears as redness, cracking, and dry patches — usually on the hands and forearms. It develops gradually from repeated exposure and heals when the contact stops.
  3. Allergic dermatitis is an immune reaction that worsens with each exposure. Once sensitized, even tiny amounts of the allergen cause severe itching, blistering, and swelling — and the sensitivity is permanent.
  4. Prevention is the key: wear the correct gloves, use barrier creams before work, wash hands with mild soap (not solvents) after exposure, and apply moisturizer at the end of the day.
  5. Report skin problems early. What starts as a minor rash can become a chronic condition that limits what tasks you can perform. Early treatment is much more effective than treating advanced dermatitis.

Ask the crew

Is anyone experiencing persistent skin irritation, dryness, or rash on their hands — and have you reported it?

  • Section 5(a)(1)

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
