Muriatic Acid (Hydrochloric) in Construction

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) is commonly used for cleaning masonry, etching concrete, and removing mortar stains. It is extremely corrosive and releases toxic fumes.
  2. The OSHA ceiling limit for hydrochloric acid is 5 ppm. Even below this level, fumes irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Work outdoors or with strong ventilation.
  3. Always dilute acid by adding it to water — never the reverse. Start with a weak dilution and increase concentration only if needed. Stronger is not always better.
  4. Required PPE includes chemical splash goggles, acid-resistant gloves (butyl rubber or neoprene), a rubber apron, and rubber boots. A respirator with acid gas cartridges may be needed indoors.
  5. Neutralize spills with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or lime before cleanup. Never wash muriatic acid into storm drains — it is an environmental violation.

Ask the crew

If we are using muriatic acid today, do we have the correct PPE, a spill neutralizer, and adequate ventilation?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
