Mobile Crane Setup and Inspection
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Set up the crane on level, firm ground. Outriggers must be fully extended and set on adequate blocking or cribbing — never on soft or undermined ground.
- Review the load chart before every lift. The rated capacity depends on the configuration: boom length, radius, quadrant of operation, and whether outriggers are extended.
- A pre-shift visual inspection by the operator is required. Monthly inspections by a competent person and annual inspections by a qualified person must also be documented.
- Check the swing radius — the area the counterweight sweeps must be barricaded or otherwise protected to prevent workers from being struck or crushed.
- Before the first lift, verify that all safety devices — LMI (load moment indicator), anti-two-block, boom angle indicator — are functional.
Ask the crew
Has the load chart been reviewed for today's heaviest planned lift — and are the outriggers on adequate support?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
