Material Storage and Housekeeping

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Stack materials on level, solid surfaces. Limit stack heights per material type: lumber no more than 20 feet, bricks no more than 7 feet.
  2. Secure round stock (pipe, rebar, conduit) with blocking or chocks to prevent rolling. One loose piece at the bottom can bring down an entire stack.
  3. Keep aisles and access routes clear at all times — both for daily work and for emergency egress. A cluttered path is a tripping hazard and a rescue obstacle.
  4. Separate incompatible materials: keep oxidizers away from flammables, acids away from bases, and chemicals away from food and water supplies.
  5. Good housekeeping prevents accidents. Clean up as you go — don't wait for the end of the shift. Nails, scraps, and debris cause trips and punctures.

Ask the crew

Walk through your work area mentally — is there anything stacked or stored right now that could fall, roll, or block an exit?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
