Masonry Wall Bracing
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Masonry walls over 8 feet in height must be braced to prevent collapse until permanent structural support is in place.
- A limited access zone must be established on the unbraced side of the wall equal to the wall height plus 4 feet. No one may enter this zone.
- Wind is the most common cause of masonry wall collapse during construction. Monitor conditions and increase bracing in gusty weather.
- Braces must be designed or specified by a competent person and attached to both the wall and a stable anchor point.
- Do not remove bracing until the mortar has achieved adequate strength and permanent structural connections (roof, floor, cross-walls) are in place.
Ask the crew
Are the masonry walls in our work area braced — and is the limited access zone established and respected?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
