Marine and Barge Operations

Talking points

  1. Personal flotation devices (PFDs) are required for workers over or adjacent to water where the danger of drowning exists — generally within 25 feet of water's edge.
  2. Ring buoys with at least 90 feet of line must be provided every 200 feet along the water's edge.
  3. A rescue skiff must be immediately available at locations where workers are over water. 'Available' means crewed, fueled, and ready to deploy.
  4. Barge decks are walking-working surfaces — keep them clear of tripping hazards, and ensure guardrails are in place on open edges.
  5. Weather and water conditions can change quickly. Monitor forecasts and suspend operations during severe weather, high winds, or dangerous currents.

Ask the crew

Is everyone near the water wearing a PFD right now — and where is the nearest ring buoy and rescue skiff?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
