Manlift and Personnel Basket Operations

Talking points
- Lifting personnel with a crane requires a personnel platform (basket) that meets specific design and testing requirements. Improvised platforms — pallets, buckets, crates — are prohibited.
- The platform must be proof-tested to 125% of its rated capacity before first use and after any modification. A trial lift to the working height must be performed before personnel enter.
- The crane's capacity must be derated to 50% of its rated load for personnel lifting. This provides a 2:1 safety factor not required for material handling.
- All personnel in the basket must wear a full-body harness attached to a structural member within the platform itself — not to the load line, and never to the crane boom.
- The crane operator must remain at the controls at all times when personnel are in the platform. No other operations may be performed simultaneously.
Ask the crew
If we need to lift personnel with a crane, has the basket been proof-tested and the crane derated — and is there a trial lift planned?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
