Manhole Entry Safety
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Manholes combine multiple hazards: limited entry/exit, hazardous atmospheres (H₂S, methane, low O₂), traffic above, water intrusion, and sharp edges at the opening.
- Traffic control must be established around the manhole before opening the cover. A vehicle running over an open or poorly protected manhole is an immediate fatality risk.
- Test the atmosphere before entry: oxygen first, then combustible gases, then toxic gases (especially H₂S in sewer manholes). Test at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Use a tripod and retrieval system over the manhole opening. Vertical entry makes non-entry rescue with a retrieval line the most effective and fastest rescue method.
- The manhole cover itself is a hazard. Covers are heavy, slippery, and can pinch fingers. Use a proper manhole hook to lift and set covers — do not use improvised tools.
Ask the crew
If we are entering a manhole today, is traffic control in place, the atmosphere tested, and a tripod set up over the opening?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
