Machine Guarding — Power Presses

General industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Power presses are responsible for a significant number of workplace amputations. Point-of-operation guards are mandatory and must prevent hands from entering the die area.
  2. Anti-repeat mechanisms prevent the press from cycling more than once per actuation. These must be tested and verified weekly.
  3. Two-hand trip controls require both hands to be on the buttons simultaneously, keeping them clear of the point of operation during the stroke.
  4. Inspect clutch and brake mechanisms weekly. A press that does not stop reliably at the top of the stroke is immediately dangerous.
  5. Pull-back devices must be properly adjusted to each operator. Retract straps that are too loose will not clear your hands in time.

Ask the crew

What would you do if you noticed the press was occasionally double-stroking — even if it seemed minor?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
