LPG (Propane) Safety

Talking points
- Store propane cylinders at least 20 feet from combustible materials and any building opening (doors, windows, air intakes).
- Check for leaks using soapy water on all connections. Never use an open flame to check for gas leaks.
- Cylinders must not be filled beyond 80% capacity — liquid propane expands with temperature increases, and overfilling can cause a catastrophic release.
- When using propane heaters in enclosed spaces, ensure adequate ventilation for both combustion air and CO exhaust. Follow manufacturer spacing requirements.
- If you smell propane (it has an added odorant that smells like rotten eggs or skunk), shut off the source, ventilate the area, eliminate ignition sources, and evacuate.
Ask the crew
Are we using any propane on site today — and is the storage and ventilation set up correctly?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
