LOTO — Group Lockout Procedures
Construction and general industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- Group lockout is required when multiple workers from one or more trades service the same equipment simultaneously. It adds coordination requirements to the standard LOTO process.
- A single authorized employee must be designated to coordinate the group lockout. This person is responsible for applying and removing the primary lockout device and coordinating with all crafts.
- Every worker in the group must apply their own personal lock to a group lockout device (such as a lockout hasp). No one else may remove their lock.
- Shift changes during group lockout require orderly transfer — oncoming workers apply their locks before outgoing workers remove theirs. There must never be a moment when the equipment is unlocked during a shift change.
- Communication is the key to safe group lockout. Before the work begins, all workers must understand the energy sources, the isolation points, and the sequence of operations.
Ask the crew
If multiple trades are working on the same equipment today, who is the designated group lockout coordinator?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
