Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Awareness

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas that smells like rotten eggs at low concentrations — but at dangerous levels it deadens your sense of smell, so you cannot rely on odor as a warning.
  2. OSHA limits are: 20 ppm ceiling, with a 50 ppm peak allowed for no more than 10 minutes. The IDLH level is 100 ppm.
  3. H₂S is encountered in sewers, manholes, excavations near swamps or landfills, oil and gas operations, and wastewater treatment facilities.
  4. H₂S is heavier than air and accumulates in low-lying areas — trenches, pits, and confined spaces. Always monitor before entering these areas.
  5. At high concentrations, H₂S causes immediate unconsciousness and can be fatal within minutes. Rescue attempts without SCBA have killed more people than the original exposure.

Ask the crew

Are we working near any sources of H₂S today — and do we have functioning gas monitors on site?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
