Hydraulic Press and Bending Machine Safety
General industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- Hydraulic presses and bending machines generate enormous force — enough to crush any part of the human body instantly. Point-of-operation guards must be in place during all operations.
- Two-hand controls require both hands to be on the buttons simultaneously, ensuring they are clear of the point of operation during the press stroke.
- Light curtains detect the presence of a body part in the danger zone and stop the machine before the stroke completes. Never reach around, under, or behind a light curtain.
- Before performing any die change, maintenance, or adjustment, lock out the hydraulic power unit, bleed residual pressure, and block the ram mechanically.
- Never place your hands or fingers between the dies to position material. Use tongs, clamps, or feeding devices to keep your hands outside the point of operation.
Ask the crew
Are the guards and two-hand controls on our press functioning properly — and is the LOTO procedure followed for every die change?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
