High-Visibility Clothing
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- ANSI Class 2 high-visibility vests or shirts are the minimum for most construction work near vehicle traffic or mobile equipment.
- Class 3 garments — which cover more of the body including the arms and legs — are what ANSI/ISEA 107 and the national work-zone standard (MUTCD) call for near high-speed traffic (over 50 mph) or in low light.
- Retroreflective strips must be clean and intact. Faded, torn, or covered stripes reduce your visibility significantly — especially at dawn, dusk, and at night.
- High-visibility clothing does not make you invincible. Always maintain situational awareness, make eye contact with equipment operators, and use designated walkways.
- Replace high-vis garments when the background fluorescent fabric has faded or when retroreflective strips no longer reflect light when tested.
Ask the crew
Take a look at your vest right now — are the reflective strips still bright, or is it time for a replacement?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
