Hearing Protection — Proper Insertion Deep Dive

Talking points
- A foam earplug inserted incorrectly can provide less than half its rated NRR. Proper insertion is the single most important factor in hearing protection effectiveness.
- The correct technique: roll the plug into a tight, crease-free cylinder. Reach over your head with the opposite hand and pull the top of your ear up and back to straighten the ear canal. Insert the plug deep and hold for 30 seconds while it expands.
- After insertion, the end of the plug should be flush with or slightly inside the ear canal opening. If you can easily grab and pull it out, it is not deep enough.
- In extremely noisy environments (above 100 dBA), dual protection — earplugs under earmuffs — provides the highest protection. The combined NRR is approximately the higher NRR plus 5 dB.
- Custom-molded earplugs offer consistent fit and comfort for workers who use hearing protection daily. They are more expensive initially but reduce waste and improve compliance.
Ask the crew
Let's practice right now — everyone insert your earplugs using the correct technique, and have a partner check the depth.

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
