Hand Protection — Glove Selection

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Match the glove to the hazard: cut-resistant gloves for sharp materials, chemical-resistant gloves for solvents and acids, insulated gloves for heat, and leather for general construction.
  2. Cut-resistant gloves are rated A1 through A9 under ANSI/ISEA 105 — know the cut level required for your task. Sheet metal and glass typically require A4 or higher.
  3. Chemical gloves must match the specific chemical — no single glove material resists everything. Check the SDS for glove recommendations.
  4. Do NOT wear gloves near rotating machinery, drill presses, or lathes. A glove can be caught and pull your hand into the machine faster than you can react.
  5. Inspect gloves before use: look for tears, holes, thinning, and degradation. Replace them when they no longer provide the intended protection.

Ask the crew

Are you wearing the right type of glove for the work you're doing today — and what hazard is it protecting you from?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
