Hand and Power Tool Safety
Construction and general industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- Use the right tool for the job. Improvising — using a wrench as a hammer or a screwdriver as a pry bar — damages the tool and creates hazards.
- All power tools must have guards in place. Do not remove, modify, or bypass the guard to gain access or speed.
- Electric power tools must be grounded (three-prong plug) or double-insulated (marked with a square-within-a-square symbol). Never remove the ground pin.
- Inspect tools before each use: check for cracked housings, frayed cords, dull blades, loose handles, and mushroomed heads on chisels and punches.
- Disconnect power tools before changing blades, bits, or accessories. For pneumatic tools, disconnect the air supply first.
Ask the crew
Is there a damaged or worn-out tool in your kit right now that should be replaced?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
