Talking points

  1. Safety footwear must meet ASTM F2413 standards. Look for the I/75 (impact) and C/75 (compression) ratings stamped inside the boot.
  2. For work near electrical hazards, wear EH-rated boots that provide insulation against accidental contact with energized circuits up to 600 volts.
  3. Metatarsal guards provide additional protection for the top of the foot and are recommended for heavy material handling, steel erection, and demolition.
  4. Slip-resistant soles are essential for wet, oily, or smooth surfaces. Check the outsole condition regularly — worn treads offer little traction.
  5. Replace safety boots when the sole separates, the toe cap is exposed, or the leather is torn or cracked. Worn-out boots are not safety boots.

Ask the crew

Look at the soles of your boots — do they still have good tread, and are they the right type for the surfaces you're working on today?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
