First Aid and Emergency Response

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. A first aid kit must be available on every construction site. Its contents must be appropriate for the hazards present and be checked regularly to replace used items.
  2. At least one person trained in first aid and CPR must be available within 3-4 minutes of any work area where there is no infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity.
  3. Emergency phone numbers — 911, the site safety contact, and the nearest hospital — must be posted and known by all workers.
  4. Know the location of the nearest AED (automated external defibrillator) if one is available. In cardiac arrest, defibrillation within 3-5 minutes dramatically improves survival.
  5. Do not move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger. Spinal injuries can be worsened by improper movement. Wait for trained medical responders.

Ask the crew

Where is the nearest first aid kit and AED, and who on this crew is trained in CPR?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
